DepEd names new assistant secretary

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC has announced the appointment of Ms. Elena R. Ruiz as Assistant Secretary for Programs and Projects of the Department of Education.
 
Ms. Ruiz brings to DepEd more than 40 years of academic expertise and managerial experience in the public school system. She started as a secondary school teacher in 1970 and rose to the ranks as principal, superintendent, and regional director at the National Capital Region prior to being named assistant secretary.

Expanded early school registration set on January 28

No one left behind. Everybody goes to school.
 
This is the goal set by the Department of Education as it declares January 28, 2012 as early registration day for School Year (S.Y.) 2012-2013 in all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide.
 
Last year, the early registration covered only kindergarten which jumpstarted the K to 12 basic education reform program, as well as Grade 1 pupils and First Year high school students. This year, DepEd has expanded the target of early registration to include out-of school children (OSC) and out-of school youth (OSY), and learners with disability.

KIDS AT ILOILO DUMPSITE: FROM GARBAGE TO BOOKS

BETWEEN garbage and books, children from poor families would rather scavenge than read; the former, for survival, the latter a pastime they can hardly afford, and may not have the time at all.

Or they will always choose to be in the dumpsite than in the classrooms because they have become used to it, for scavenging is easy money having seen how their parents had been engaged in this "livelihood" ever since they can remember.

For parents, having their children scour at the dumpsite is a necessity to help the family; they never realized that they are forcing their children into one of the worst forms of child labor- scavenging, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO).Barangay Calahunan in Mandurriao,Iloilo City is a mountain of a dumpsite where the more than four million residents of the city deposit their tons of garbage every day.

Luistro warns DepEd personnel against unaccredited HEIs

The Department of Education has directed its officials and personnel not to enroll in higher education institutions (HEIs) offering masteral and doctoral degree programs which are not recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). 

The directive was contained in DepEd Order No. 78 s. 2011 which orders that DepEd officials and personnel must refrain from enrolling in non-accredited colleges and universities offering higher education programs which are similarly not authorized.

DepEd joins campaign for Puerto Princesa Underground River

Education Secretary Armin Luistro has echoed the national call to support the campaign to recognize the Puerto Princesa Underground River one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

 Luistro has issued Memorandum No. 138, series 2011, to call on the entire department to work towards awareness, appreciation, preservation and promotion of our own Puerto Princesa Underground River to be included in the New Seven Wonders of Nature (N7WN) through various activities and other initiatives

 “As a nation, what we lack in material wealth, we compensate with the richness of our natural resources, hence, we should take advantage of this by putting our country on top of the world,” said Luistro.

DepEd asks public to refer to guidelines on suspension of classes during bad weather

 The Department of Education  has called on the public especially parents to use as guide  the existing policies on suspension of classes  during bad weather condition to keep children out of harm.  

 Based on DepEd Order No. 28, series of 2005, classes in all public and private elementary and secondary schools are automatically suspended or cancelled without having to wait for announcement under the following circumstances:
